Os lotes eos arruamentos que os defi nem seguem numa malharegular, paralela à Avenida Ayres de Ornellas, quetermina de um modo algo abrupto no encosto como esteiro de Santa Inez do lado nascente. Tambémparalelamente à avenida se desenvolveu um jardim.Lotes e jardim compõem de um modo quase perfeitamentesimétrico o desenho do Campal (Fig. 13).Em Dezembro de 1907, a Repartição Superior daFazenda procedia à venda de 10 lotes em hastapública .77 Começou assim a urbanização do novobairro que tinha regras bastante apertadas 78 , demodo a que os terrenos não fossem transformadosem palmares como acontecia no resto da cidade.Criaram-se também procedimentos para controlara qualidade das construções e as suas condiçõessanitárias. As obras estavam praticamente terminadasem 1909 79 e a sua regulamentação provouser um sucesso. Nos fi nais da década de 1930 80 , aurbanização do Campal estava concluída com atotalidade dos seus lotes construídos.A urbanização da zona de Miramar, uma área delotes com a mesma fi losofi a que o Campal 81 , teveque esperar alguns anos até começar a ser urbanizada.A restante área, até Caranzalém, iria ter deesperar muitos mais.CONTINUAÇÃO DAS OBRASNA ZONA CENTRAL DA CIDADEPara além dos planos de expansão da cidade, asobras na zona central continuavam. Abriam-se“ruas e avenidas que estabelecessem comunicaçõesmais faceis de bairros, e com os arrabaldes, e provocassema edifi cação de casas (...)”. 82Os habitantes de Nova Goa empenhavam-se nosmelhoramentos da cidade. Uma fonte ressaltouque duas “distinctas familias hindus” tinham cedidoterrenos gratuitamente e que habitantes dasaldeias de Santa Cruz, Taleigão e Pangim tinhamcedido gratuitamente terrenos ou tinham contribuídocom trabalho para a abertura da Avenidade Circunvalação 83 , tendo construído, à sua custa,passeios nas ruas da cidade.and in the new development in Campo de D.Manuel” 76 . The type of work referred to shows thatthe construction of the avenue was already in thefi nal phase.Instead of blocks, which characterised the otherdistricts, plots were defi ned and houses of one ortwo storeys were built on each one. The plots andthe streets that delineated them followed a regulargrid, laid out parallel to the Avenida Ayres deOrnellas, which ended somewhat abruptly on theSanta Inês canal at the eastern side. A garden wasalso laid out parallel to the avenue. The plots andgarden compose in an almost perfectly symmetricalway the design of Campal (Fig. 13).In December 1907, the Treasury Offi ce sold tenplots by public auction 77 . This marked the beginningof the development of the new neighbourhood,which had quite rigid rules 78 , to prevent theplots of land from being transformed into palmgroves, which was what had happened in the rest ofthe city. Procedures were also established to controlthe quality of the constructions and their sanitaryconditions.The works were practically completed in 1909 79and the measures adopted were a success. In thelate 1930s 80 the urbanisation of Campal was concluded,with all the plots having being built upon.The urbanisation of the Miramar an area of plots ofland with the same philosophy as Campal 81 , had towait some years for the beginning of the developmentworks and the remaining area, as far as Caranzalem,had a much longer wait.MORE WORKS IN THECENTRAL AREA OF THE CITYIn addition to the plans for the expansion of thecity, the works in the central zone continued.Streets and avenues were laid out that made theconnections with the residential neighbourhoodseasier and also with the suburbs, thus facilitating thebuilding of houses 82 .The inhabitants of New Goa were committed toimproving the city.
