Foram abertas:a Rua Central 42 , paralela à Rua Quatro de Abril 43 eduas ruas perpendiculares a esta, uma a nascenteque termina na Rua de Ourém e outra a poente quetermina no sopé do outeiro da Conceição 44 .Em 1881, abriu-se a Rua de S. Sebastião. Para issoforam demolidas várias casas, tendo sido desmontadae remontada a capela construída em 1818 45que passou, em 1888, data da sua re-consagração, arematar a rua do lado poente, oposto àquele ondese encontrava anteriormente (Fig. 8). O projecto égeralmente atribuído a José d’Assa Castel-Branco 46 ,que ocupou posteriormente o cargo de director dasObras Públicas.Pode ver-se pela comparação das duas plantassupracitadas que teriam sido abertas: a Rua de S.Tomé, também paralela à Rua 4 de Abril, que foibuscar o nome à pequena capela de S. Tomé quese encontra no seu início do lado norte; a Rua doCaes; a Travessa do Outeiro; uma outra rua paralelaa estas duas, que se situava entre elas, cujo nome sedesconhece e, mais a sul, a Rua de S. Filipe Nery.Duas delas devem ter sido abertas por volta de1888, uma vez que em Março desse ano se faziamexpropriações com essa fi nalidade 47 . Ainda em 1903se faziam expropriações para a abertura de umatravessa que ligava a Rua Visconde de Ourém àwalks” was opened 34 . Rua Nova de Ourém or Ruade Ourém 35 (Fig. 5) as it was called until today, wasthe waterfront street that separated the neighbourhoodfrom the creek, contributing to a considerableimprovement in the conditions of health and accessfor the residents. It was not completed until 1879and was widened in 1924. 36 The Viscount of Ourémcreated the façade of the Fénix Fountain, furtherqualifying an area that was the natural continuationof Fontainhas.From December 1878 onwards, the year in whichCaetano de Almeida Albuquerque became Governorin Goa (1878-82), other works projects were plannedand carried out by the Department of Public Workswith a view to improving the sanitary conditions inthe capital in conformity with instructions receivedfrom Lisbon 37 . The very same month Albuquerquetook offi ce, the Anglo-Portuguese agreement wassigned in Bombay that resulted in the constructionof the railway line in Goa 38 . Great transformationswere then expected in the territory.The new development works in Fontainhas wereparticularly important 39 . Levelling and sanitationworks were begun in the whole neighborhood, asone can see from a comparison between the mapsof Panjim from 1870 40 and from 1888 41 (Figs. 6and 7).
