viABSTRACTObjectives: To <strong>de</strong>termine the inci<strong>de</strong>nce of congenital syphillis (CS) at Hospital Universitário –<strong>UFSC</strong> (HU/<strong>UFSC</strong>), to know the epi<strong>de</strong>miologic profile of the mother and her infant affected andto verify in which proportion the i<strong>de</strong>ntified cases were notified to the Diretoria <strong>de</strong> VigilânciaEpi<strong>de</strong>miológica <strong>de</strong> Santa Catari<strong>na</strong> (DIVE/SC).Methods: Retrospective cross-sectio<strong>na</strong>l study including all cases of CS that took place atHU/<strong>UFSC</strong> from August 1st, 2007 to July 31st, 2008, i<strong>de</strong>ntified through an active search in thehospital´s computerized database for parturient women with reactive non-treponemic test,followed by the search on their medical records. Liveborns, stillborns and abortions that fit thecase <strong>de</strong>finition a<strong>do</strong>pted by the Ministério da Saú<strong>de</strong> <strong>do</strong> Brasil were consi<strong>de</strong>red as cases of CS. Asimple <strong>de</strong>scriptive a<strong>na</strong>lysis of the most relevant epi<strong>de</strong>miologic features of the mother and herinfant affected was <strong>do</strong>ne. Fi<strong>na</strong>lly, the number of CS cases i<strong>de</strong>ntified was compared to thosenotified to the DIVE/SC.Results: In the reserach, 8 cases of CS were i<strong>de</strong>ntified, 6 liveborn infants and two abortions. Theinci<strong>de</strong>nce of congenital syphillis in liveborns was 3.8/1000. The features of the affected mothersand her infants were similar to the <strong>de</strong>scribed in literature. Among the 6 liveborns i<strong>de</strong>ntified cases,two (33%) were notified, while none of the abortions were.Conclusions: The inter<strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l and <strong>na</strong>tio<strong>na</strong>l efforts to elimi<strong>na</strong>te congenital syphilis mustcontinue, seeking an inci<strong>de</strong>nce smaller than 1 case/1000 alive newborns. Besi<strong>de</strong>s, the notificationof the disease should be emphasized as a serious commitment.
