ABSTRACTWaste residues of poly[(ethylene)-co-(vinyl acetate)] (EVA) from shoesindustry were incorporated in new rubber formulations, to be used as shoe soles.EVA residues of different origins and in different amounts were employed. Thecontents incorporated were 10, 20, 30 and 50 phr. The granulometric distribution ofthe residues were drastically different. After mixing, the materials were conducted tothe vulcanization. Vulcanized materials were characterized in terms of hardness, density, tear, bending and abrasion strength as well as in term of their thermalproperties, via DSC and TGA. Properties like density, bending strength and thermalstability were affected neither by residue content nor by the residue nature. However, the abrasion properties have lowered when employing residues containing highergranulometric distribution. Tear strength has increased at lower (10 and 20 phr) anddecreased at higher (30 and 50 phr) residue contents. Results indicated that EVAresidues can be satisfactorily incorporated into new rubber formulations.
