ABSTRACTObjective: To <strong>de</strong>termine the prevalence of <strong>de</strong>pressive symptoms in medical inpatients withprevious history of stroke at the University Hospital of Fe<strong>de</strong>ral University of Santa Catarina(HU-<strong>UFSC</strong>), using the Beck Depressive Inventory (BDI).Method: In a transversal study, at the general medical wards of the HU-<strong>UFSC</strong>, we accessedall consecutive inpatients with previous history of stroke during their first week of admission,between October/2004 and February/2005. Of the 41 patients with previous history of stroke,17 were exclu<strong>de</strong>d because of cognitive or physical impairment (due or not to the stroke) thatdisabled th<strong>em</strong> to answer the questions. Socio<strong>de</strong>mographic and clinical data were collected byinterview and by chart. We <strong>de</strong>scribed the frequencies of the 21 it<strong>em</strong>s of the BDI. In or<strong>de</strong>r to<strong>de</strong>termine the prevalence, we used the cognitive-affective subscale (first 13 it<strong>em</strong>s of the BDI),with a cutoff point > 10.Results: The sample was composed by 24 patients, predominately women (70.8%), white(95.8%), married (58.3%), with a familiar income less or equal than 2 minimum wage. Th<strong>em</strong>ean age ± Standard Deviation (SD) was 52,3 ± 12,9 years. Twenty-five percent of thepatients presented mo<strong>de</strong>rate to severe <strong>de</strong>pressive symptoms (BDI-13>10 points). The morefrequent symptoms were irritability (33,3%), in<strong>de</strong>cision (33,3%), easy crying (29,2%), lack ofpleasure (25%), and self-punishment (25%).Conclusion: One in four patients with previous history of stroke presented mo<strong>de</strong>rate to severe<strong>de</strong>pressive symptoms.Key-words: Depressive Symptoms; Stroke; Medical Inpatients; General Hospital.vi
