103been characterized as too time‐consuming and complex. Descriptions of these problems arefollowed by the R‐PAS solutions, which function as key components of the R‐PAS administrationmethod and psychometric foundation. The Comprehensive System (Exner, 1974; 2003) has emerged as the dominantinternational Rorschach System (Rorschach, 1921; Shaffer, Erdberg, & Meyer, 2007) with strongdevelopments in Brazil (e.g., Resende, Viglione, & Argimon, 2009; Nascimento, 2007; Villemor‐Amaral, Yazigi, Nascimento, Primi, & Semer, 2007).Although the CS has been lauded for itsproviding a strong empirical basis for the Rorschach, a number of psychometric problems haveemerged in the research literature. This paper addresses six inter‐related, critical problems withthe CS: (1) interpretation does not match evidence base, (2) inaccurate norms, (3) variability inthe number of responses per protocol, (4) examiner variability, (5) scoring unreliability, and (6)variable with idiosyncratic distributions. The first five are addressed in separate sectionswhereas the idiosyncratic distributions is addressed as a psychometric issues inherent in theother problems and solutions. An additional structural handicap is that the CS is currentlylimited in its ability to evolve with recent and emerging research. In addition, the Rorschach hasbeen characterized as too time‐consuming and complex. Descriptions of these problems arefollowed by the R‐PAS solutions, which function as key components of the R‐PAS administrationmethod and psychometric foundation. The solutions to these problems are the foundation of R‐PAS and the rationale for the claim that is to be considered an advancement in the Rorschachmethod. Can the CS Evolve With Research Findings?Since John Exner’s passing in 2006, research has not been able to influence or effectchanges to the CS. There is no obvious way for the CS to change with new findings – no path torespond to the problems posed by research, and no obvious way for the CS to evolve withemerging research findings. Rorschach‐based assessment needs to evolve with new researchfindings and clinical questions. However, no changes have been made to the CS for six years
