Digital cities arise as territory boosters and segregated spaces reintegrators. Cities
are restructured by the new technologies that reduce integration time between
urban core and rural districts, and create new streams of territorial integration.
The progress towards even more intensive societies concerning information and
knowledge will require cultural changes in management and planning sectors, imposing
a coordinated government action, creating the capacity to provide information
and knowledge as a public asset. And as long as poverty is also related to basic
rights and access to public assets, voice and data transmission system establishment
with universal access, broadband Internet in schools and community radio stations,
the use of technological alternatives on job searches, in cooperative products commercialization
and micro-credit system provision allow a more effective action in
programs against poverty. As the slogan of Piraí Digital and Rio das Flores Digital
program states: Technology is the means, information is a right.
