Verônicade Azeve<strong>do</strong> Mazza.ABSTRACTA descriptive study with a qualitative approach that had the aim of characterizing thesocial support network of carriers of arterial hypertension. The data collectionhappened from October, 2009 to April, 2010 at a unit of Family Care of a town fromthe metropolitan area of Curitiba – PR. 32 carriers of arterial hypertensionparticipated in the study - they were registered and have been active in the programof hypertensive and diabetic patients – HIPERDIA for more than one year, agingbetween 18 to 60 years old and have accepted to participate in the study. The datawas obtained through a semi-structured interview and was analyzed by the ContentAnalysis, which allowed the identification of four thematic categories: Family assupport of the carrier of arterial Hypertension, The Community Relations, The SocialSupport from friends and the Care without Support. The family was the principalsupport provider regarded by the hypertensive patients, being characterized bymaterial aid and services, cognitive guide and counseling, emotional support andsocial companionship; however, material support in the assistance of the use ofmedicine and general care with nourishment is highlighted. The Community Relationsare represented by the health service and religious groups; among the different waysof supporting that come from the health services, what is highlighted is the cognitiveguide and advice granted by information, counseling, guidance to deal with healthproblems and material aid provided by medical appointments and examination ofarterial pressure. Support from friends is also considered important, since they arethe ones who the patients can count on, telling them what they feel and gettingadvice too. Nonetheless, social companion from friends is better accepted especiallywhen it comes to leisure. Although the benefits of social support in peoples’ lives,some of the hypertensive patients <strong>do</strong> not relate hypertension care, since they showdifficulties in obtaining help with the accompaniment of their treatment and arereluctant to ask for it. It is emphasized the importance of the results that are found assubsidies to the health professionals, especially the nurse of basic attention that mustvalue the social net work represented by the relatives, friends and communityrelations as a strategy of providing a well-effective assistance with the aim ofimproving the quality of life of these people.Key-words: Social Support; Chronic Disease; Nursing; Adult Health; ProfessionalPractice.
