ABSTRACTThe research a<strong>na</strong>lyzes the creative process in translation from Italian toPortuguese, the episo<strong>de</strong> of "Paolo and Francesca" canto V of the"Inferno" the Divine Comedy by Dante Alighieri, done by Dom PedroII, last emperor of Brazil. The strategies used by the mo<strong>na</strong>rch in histranslation process are investigated. Similarly, the reason for choosingthe canto V is verified, if there was political motivation or otherwise totranslate Dante. Fi<strong>na</strong>lly, the <strong>de</strong>monstration objectifies, throughexamining the manuscripts of the translator, observing their erasures,notes and researching in materials available that time, that is possible totrace the creative process and the factors which influenced thetranslation, i<strong>de</strong>ntifying standards and patterns in their genesis. Theresearch is based on theoretical and methodological principles ofGenetic Criticism, with aid of Polysystem Theory and DescriptiveTranslation Studies.key-words: Dom Pedro II, the creative process, translation, DivineComedy.
