Az Asszír Birodalom ekkoriban északon Melidig,északnyugaton Quéig, délnyugaton Szamáriáig, délkeleten a korabeli Perzsa-öbölig terjedt.Északkeleten Asszíria és Média között húzódott a határ.SZÍN-AHHÉ-ERÍBA HADJÁRATAISzín-ahhé-eríba, a nagy király, az erõs király, a világmindenségkirálya. Assur királya, a négy világtáj királya,a tevékeny pásztor, a nagy istenek kedveltje, a jog védõje,aki szereti az igazságot, aki jótékonyságot cselekszik,aki a gyengéhez társul szegõdik, aki a jó fele fordul, atökéletes hõs, a vitéz férfi, minden királyok elseje, a fejedelem,aki szétzúzza az ellenkezõt, aki villámot szór agonoszra – Assur isten, a nagy hegy, nekem juttatta akirályságot, melynek nincs párja; minden szentély lakójafölött naggyá tette a fegyvereimet. Sarrukín trónbitorlókéntaz Asszír Birodalom uralkodójalett, Szín-ahhé-eríba már legalább 25éves lehetett, és azonnal megkapta akoronahercegi címet, amely önállópalotával és udvartartással járt. Koronahercegipalotáját Ninivében rendeztebe, tehát nem véletlenül választottakésõbb ezt a várost székhelyéül.Az ebbõl az idõszakból fennmaradt levelezései alapján fõ feladata az Asszíriaészaki határainál mûködõ titkosszolgálati rendszer koordinálása volt, õgyûjtötte össze és õ továbbította az információkat az uralkodónak.Trónra apja váratlan és szégyenletes halála után került. II. Sarrukín Kr. e.705-ben az északnyugati határvidékre vonult, mivel egy számunkra kevésbéismert, de komoly gazdasági és katonai erõt képviselõ régió, Tabal (nagyjábóla késõbbi Kappadókia területe) területén újra bizonytalanná vált a helyzet.Tabal számos kisebb királyságból tevõdött össze, és stratégiai jelentõségeabban állt, hogy itt volt az ütközõzóna a Midasz vezette Phrügia és az elõretörõAsszíria között. A korábban már többször alávetett területet hiába próbáltameg II. Sarrukín stratégiai településekkel kordában tartani, hol azegyik királyságban, hol a másikban ütötte fel a fejét egy-egy lázadás. Utolsóhadjáratában egy kisebb hatalom, Kullumu vezetõjével, Gurdival kellettmegütköznie, de holtan maradt a csatatéren. A vereség igen súlyos lehetett,mivel katonáinak az uralkodó holttestét sem sikerült elõkeríteniük.Ez a katasztrófa annál is meglepõbb volt a kortársak számára, mert a II.Sarrukín vezette Asszíria sorra gyõzte le ellenfeleit és addig soha nem látottmértékben terjesztette ki a birodalom határait.
