A simulation study is carried out to evaluate theperformance of the proposed algorithm in terms of parameter recovery. LaurettoEACH - USPJulio Michael SternIME - USPThe problem of symmetry hypothesis is fundamental in statistics analysis, where the researcher mustassess the existence of a certain symmetry condition. In several applications, the state of compliance,normality or health is characterized by the existence of symmetries. In these situations, the lack ofsymmetry is an indicator of non-compliance, abnormality or illness. The early detection of the lack ofsymmetry can frequently allow the repair, maintenance or simplified treatment, thus avoiding much moreexpensive and complex late procedures. This kind of early detection may be helpful in avoiding severeconsequences, e.g the breaking of an important part in a machine during its operation.A broad and important subarea in Statistics consists in the symmetry tests in contingency tables,and several methods have been devised for symmetry in contingency tables.In this work we propose the Full Bayesian Significance Test (FBST) for the problems of symmetryand point-symmetry in contingency tables. FBST is an intuitive Bayesian approach which does notassign positive probabilities to zero measure sets when testing sharp hypotheses. Numerical experimentscomparing FBST performance to power-divergence statistics suggest that FBST is a good alternative forproblems concerning tests for symmetry in contingency tables.60
