O presente estudo gera informação de base para a construção de políticas de captação de
alunos para o projecto “o Galeão vai à Natação”.

ABSTRACT
The objectives of this study were: (1) characterize the students of Escola Básica dos 2º e 3º
Ciclos de São Roque on the experiences of swimming, and (2) provide background
information to the project "O Galeão vai à Natação". The study includes 594 students (313
boys and 281 girls) aged between 10 and 18 years old. Data were collected using a
questionnaire with 27 questions, with five open-response and 22 closed response. The
preparation of the questionnaire was supported by the teacher in charge of the chair of
swimming at the University of Madeira. Following a pretest to gauge the level of
understanding of the questionnaire to six students in a class of 5th year. The questionnaires
were answered via on-line via the school website.
In the universe of students studied only 4% (26 students) reported not knowing how to
swim. Approximately 66% of the population do not make regular physical activity during
leisure time, and only 17% of the students practice swimming in your leisure time. The
present study provides basic information for the construction of policies to attract students
to the project “O Galeão vai à Natação”.
