ABSTRACT
The study analyses the training and employability of bachelor in Physical Education and
Sports from 2002 to 2009 at the University of Madeira. The sample included 167 graduates
(73%) surveyed through an anonymous questionnaire.
The training in the physical education teaching was the most prevalent. The sport
management and the health and exercise prescription were the two branches of the course
that involved nearly 40 graduates, this is not happening with the sports training and
coaching (2%).
In the context of employability, the results revealed a high level of professional involvement
(93%), the physical education teaching was the most significant (47%), followed by training
(44%), sports management (35 %), health and exercise prescription (19%).
The coaching role was the most frequent and preferred in organizations. The results indicate
that 72% of graduates unable to obtain employment after six months and after one year
rises to 90%. Sport clubs (36%), public schools (20%), gyms (14%) were the organizations
that receive or employed more graduates, and those that receive less were the
municipalities (4%), municipalities, special education services (2%) and private schools (2%).
