The objective of this study was to evaluate the dynamic of biomass flush in a wildfire
forest soil in Central Spain. Four soils affected by a wildfire were sampled at 0-5 cm
depth, to 2, 8, 16 and 22 months after burning. Two unburned soil samples with the
same characteristics of burned soil, were used as a control.
The change over time of fire on microbial biomass was studied. Two months after
burning, DOC, extractable N and P, were significantly increased in fumigated and
unfumigated soils. Nevertheless these increases were short-lived and became
statistically not significant after eight months. A parallel decrease below the control
values of microbial N and P flush were observed after wildfire, and contrasted with a
increase in microbial biomass C flush. The tendency of burned soils is to return to
control values within one year of the fire.
