ABSTRACT
In this term paper we have analyzed the social relations brought from the border
problems, in western Paraná, especially the ones concerning the participation of
Brazilian Army soldiers through the Military Colony located at the mouth of Iguassú
river, from 1880 to 1920. The main analyzed sources were collected works once
considered trip reports, which have been produced by people who worked or visited the
Military Colony during that period. The main goal was to verify the soldiers‟ actions
and strategies in the process of occupying and colonizing the region. We have also set
up in investigating the transformations and conflicts originating from the soldiers‟
presence among populations which had lived in the venue before its foundation. This
way, it has been intended to analyze the soldiers and the Colony‟s presence in
establishing a national identity to the region. It was verified that country and state
government have tried to colonize the area; however it was the soldiers acting on behalf
of the Military Colony who initiated this process. The development of their activities
caused these soldiers to become the representatives of yerba mate and wood traders in
the Military Colony region, instead of representatives of the Brazilian state power in the
site.
