The lakefront has been an important part of Chicago for a long time. When Daniel Burnham (an architect) put together ‘The Plan of Chicago’ in 1909, the lakefront was a key feature. He believed that it should stay free of any buildings and should be accessible to all Chicagoans. And even though a lot of changes have taken place on the lakefront since then (including the construction of many buildings) it remains a public space to this day. Grant Park and Museum Campus were built south of the Chicago River along the coast, while the Chicago Lakefront Path was built to the north. The path is 30 kilometres (18 ½ miles) long and includes beaches, volleyball courts, playgrounds, baseball diamonds, tennis courts, soccer fields and bike paths. Closer to downtown is Oak Street Beach, a unique area with soft sand and a restaurant. You’ll feel like you’re down in Rio de Janeiro. (Although this beach has been made by sand that washed up against the coast.) It’s a great place to hop on your bike, cruise on your Rollerblades or simply enjoy the sun and get that vitamin D. When you’re done tanning, relax at the Oak Street Beachstro Restaurant while enjoying an icy fruit smoothie or a yummy ice cream cone. The path helps to connect the different Chicago neighbourhoods that run up the coast, such as Lincoln Park, the wildest place in Chicago. From Atlantic puffins to zebras… if there’s an animal you want to see, you’ll probably find it at the Lincoln Park Zoo. The zoo is home to over 1,100 animals—but it wasn’t always this way. When it opened more than 140 years ago, the zoo had just two animals: a pair of swans donated by New York’s Central Park. It must have been a pretty tame place to visit! Over the years, though, the zoo got more and more animals. And, today, there’s nothing tame about it. In fact, it’s the wildest place in the city! Aside from the many kinds of animals you can see, Lincoln Park Zoo also has a conservation & science department that conducts research into ways to keep different animals from going extinct (which, as you know, is a big concern). They’ve also got a ton of cool exhibits, like the Regenstein African Journey where you can get a real feel for Africa, its scenery, plants and animals. In fact it’s almost like you’re diving all the way into Africa. Birds and reptiles live together in the zoo’s Feathers and Scales exhibit. It might seem strange, but the two kinds of animals actually have a lot in common. For one thing, they’ve both been around since the age of the dinosaurs! At the Hamill Family Play Zoo you’re allowed to touch some of the animals. Parts of this Lincoln Park Zoo exhibit were even designed by kids! And if you’re really, really, really into animals, you might also want to head out to Brookfield Zoo, a larger zoo outside of Chicago. It’s about six times bigger than Lincoln Park Zoo and has about 450 different species of animals. Lakefront and Beach www.chicagoparkdistrict.com. Lincoln Park Zoo 2001 N.
