ABSTRACT
The removal of impacted third molars is one of the oral surgical procedures most
frequently performed in the odontologic surgical clinic and, as such, is associated to a
large variety of accidents and complications. The paresthesia is a local
neurosensitive disorder, temporary or definitive, induced by damages to the nervous
fibers, being the inferior alveolar nerve and the lingual nerve the most attacked
nerves by the paresthesia due to the exodontia of impacted third inferior molars. The
main paresthesia symptoms are: sensibility decrease or absence, tinglings in tong,
lips or cheeks, alterations in the taste, local itch, and thermal perception disorders.
However, the aim of this study was one review of the actual scientific literature, using
the following sources: MEDLINE, LILACS, BBO and PUBMED, sites of internet,
manual sources in books, scientific papers and periodics published between the
years of 2003 and 2009, excluding publishing previous the year of 2003; sticking out
the forms of diagnosis, treatment and preventive modalites propose for the
resolution. This clinic situation can revert itself spontaneously, however, vhen it is not
possible, some therapeutic procedures can be used, as the prescription of
antineuritics and anti-inflammatories, and the use of low potency laser. Should be
considered also that the bests ways to prevent the refired paresthesia are the
accomplishment of a perfected preoperatíve planning and the respect to all surgical
principles.
