The Song of Blackness<br />
Voices which, in another time, were raised<br />
in reverence to the orishas [deities] in the<br />
jungles <strong>and</strong> savannas of <strong>Africa</strong> <strong>and</strong> which<br />
later, in lament, crossed the Atlantic in the<br />
holds of slave ships. Voices which during<br />
centuries comforted the pain <strong>and</strong> suffering<br />
on plantations. Voices which kindled hope,<br />
ignited freedom struggles <strong>and</strong> revolts,<br />
[which, rocking to <strong>and</strong> fro,] soothed the<br />
dreams of children in runaway slave<br />
settlements. Voices which today encourage<br />
us to continue forward. Voices which<br />
celebrate the joy of those who never cease<br />
to build a new world.<br />

Vozes que outrora se elevaram em reverência aos orixás nas<br />
selvas e savanas da África e que mais tarde, em lamento, cruzaram<br />
o Atlântico nos porões dos navios negreiros. Vozes que<br />
durante séculos confortaram dores e sofrimentos nas senzalas.<br />
Vozes que acalentaram a esperança, incitaram lutas e revoltas<br />
pela libertação, adormeceram e embalaram os sonhos de crianças<br />
nos quilombos. Vozes que hoje nos encorajam a seguir<br />
em frente. Vozes que celebram a alegria dos que nunca desistem<br />
de construir um novo mundo.
