They look so much alike...
Lepê Correia*
I was there and for this reason I can guarantee,
without any mythification, that it was true. But I
keep imagining my neighbor from the outskirts
of Recife, who believes “an intellectual is a guy
who talks in television commercial about soy bean
shipments, called PIB“(GPD). I was there and I
saw, with my own eyes, and I heard with my own
ears, a truth that we, the old Europe and the new
America, are afraid to admit. Africa thinks, and its
intellectuals have, the same gifts of cognition as
do intellectuals from the so-called civilized world:
they speak with profound knowledge, with a precise
perception of the past, of the present, and of the
future. They were there, in the immense conference
room, and none of them wore loincloths, not a one
stroked a lion’s mane.
One does not even have to be an intellectual. My
same Black neighbor from the outskirts of Recife,
would understand perfectly “the size of my house
in the Good Lord’s universe“. There, in the midst of
intellectuals, heads of state, and activists from nongovernmental
organizations, I understood in the wider
sense, what “African Renaissance“ signifies. And, it is
good to make it clear, for those of lesser sensibilities,
that the expression does not mean an Africa being
born anew, but rather precisely an umbilical relationship
with a literary, artistic, and scientific movement,
much like that which occurred in the fifteenth century,
beginning in Italy, transforming the conceptions of
Europe and the world, under the inspiration of Greco-
Latin models of civilization.
It is true that the rest of the world pretends to
ignore, while we, here in Brazil, in general, prefer
to believe that “the rebirth of consciences“ is an
exclusive priviledge of European civilizations. I, for
my part, already began to tell everyone, as I am
doing now, what for some time has been happening
in Africa, with an important detail: It is the Africa
mirrored in my own rich cultural heritage, in its
current contributions, and which is being recognized
by Diasporas the world over.
No, do not think that this is just any conference
paper. As Joseph Diescho said ”We are not about
doing a dance of resurrection pretending that we
are the descendents of kings”. What happens is
that those who, for so many centuries have silenced
us, now are shocked because they cannot silence
presente e do futuro.
O meu vizinho
diásporas do mundo inteiro.
puderam calar a nossa música, a nossa literatura nem o nosso
progresso científico. Principalmente este último, que não é
coisa do hoje em dia.
