The way in which the west perceires Africa invariably
consigns the nations of the African continent
to a fatalness without future hope. These countries
and, consequently, their peoples, are presented as
incapable of inserting themselves into the process of
global development. A vision that, not by chance, is
extended to countries on other continents that, as a
result of slave traffic, have populations and cultures
marked by Afro-influences. A stigma that is not so
different for Black populations who live in countries
that today control the economy of the planet.
Heads of state, intellectuals, directors of
non-governmental organizations, and institutional
organisms from countries in Africa and the Diaspora
met together in Brazil at the Conference of Intellectuals
from Africa and its Diaspora – CIAD and CIAD
Cultural -- which took place in Salvador, offering
the world another take on the reality of Africa and
of peoples of African descent spread throughout the
continents. This time, theirs was the perception of
protagonists.
The Great Revival: Africa and Diaspora Post-CIAD
II, a project of the Palmares Cultural Foundation/Ministry
of Culture, brings together intellectuals and
protagonists involved in the process of Brazilian
ethic affirmation and their take on the consequences
brought about by the Conference and CIAD Cultural
towards the construction of an authentic Brazilian
racial democracy and the interrelationship of Brazil
with Africa and with other countries in the Diaspora.
Not one, but many perceptions, in an interdependent
plurality of common proposals and objectives,
so that the body of articles gathered here expresses
the same respect for diversity that guides the sentiment
and the force of those who seek to construct
an egalitarian world, free of the barriers of prejudice
and intolerance.
The title The Great Revival comes from the article
written by the Minister of Culture Gilberto Gil, an invitation
to us all, of all races, cultures, and countries
to be engaged in the process of reviving pathways
towards the aim of an African Renaissance, seeing
Africa as a primordial element in the construction
of a new world order that, above all, considers the
meaning of humanness.
CIAD is very well described by its coordinator
Marcelo Dantas, but for all of the authors, the concern

O olhar do mundo ocidental sobre a África, invariavelmente,
remete as nações do continente africano a uma fatalidade
sem esperança de futuro. Esses países e, consequentemente,
seus povos, são apresentados como incapazes de se inserir no
processo de desenvolvimento global. Uma visão que, não por
acaso é extensiva aos países dos demais continentes que, em
função do tráfico de escravo, têm populações e culturas marcadas
pela influência afro. Um estigma que não é diferente
também para as populações de negros que vivem nos países
que hoje comandam a economia do planeta.
Chefes de estado, intelectuais, dirigentes de organizações
não governamentais e organismos institucionais dos países
africanos e diásporos se reuniram no Brasil na II Conferência
dos Intelectuais da África e da Diáspora – CIAD e o CIAD
Cultural realizados em Salvador. Ofereceram ao mundo um
outro olhar para a realidade da África e dos povos de matrizes
africana espalhados pelos continentes. Desta vez, o olhar dos
protagonistas.
Idealizada pela Fundação Palmares/Ministério da Cultura,
A Grande Refazenda – África e Diáspora Pós II CIAD reúne o
olhar de intelectuais e protagonistas do processo de afirmação
étnica brasileira sobre as conseqüências trazidas pela Conferência
e o CIAD CULTURAL, na construção de uma autêntica
democracia racial brasileira e na inter-relação do Brasil com a
África e os demais países diásporos.
Um olhar não único, mas diverso, numa pluralidade complementar
de propósitos e objetivos comuns, de tal forma que
conjunto de artigos aqui reunidos expressa o mesmo respeito à
diversidade que norteia o sentimento e o esforço daqueles que
buscam construir um mundo igualitário, liberto das barreiras
do preconceito e intolerância.
O título A Grande Refazenda vem do artigo assinado pelo
ministro da Cultura Gilberto Gil, um convite ao engajamento
de todos nós, de todas as raças, culturas e países, no processo
de refazer caminhos na direção do renascimento africano,
entendendo a África como elemento primordial na construção
de uma nova ordem mundial, que contemple prioritariamente o
sentido humano.
A CIAD é muito bem descrita no artigo do seu coordenador,
Marcelo Dantas. Mas há em todos os autores, a preocupação
