The rising value of design Jorge De Menezes’ foray through design coincides with the most ostentatious initiatives for the activity’s insertion in Brazil. The Porto Alegre native, who arrived in Curitiba at the age of three, took part in programs offered by MAM in Rio de Janeiro and MASP in São Paulo. These institutions opened up the way for the establishment of the Escola Superior de Desenho Industrial – ESDI (School of Industrial Design) in 1963. Based on the model of the Ulm School of Design, the Brazilian school owed much to the production of Swiss designers such as Max Bill, recognized by Menezes as an indelible benchmark thanks to his formal clarity, expressive synthesis and technical excellence. In the face of this scene, Menezes considered the importance of maintaining contact with the teachers and designers from Rio de Janeiro, including Alexandre Wollner and Aloísio Magalhães, as they all dedicated themselves to demonstrating the potential of design to Brazilian business executives. The designer’s career involved efforts to foster the activity in Paraná, strategically taking on the lack of recognition of the role of the designer and the possibilities of design. The projects developed for Copel and Banestado, in the 1970s, are pioneers, considering the formation of a new culture of respect for the conditions represented through the formalization and standardization of visual identity. Regarding the eminence of a truly Paraná-based design, Menezes leaves little doubt as to his references, reiterating the importance of the universality of signs in detriment of the reproduction of regionalist symbols. He highlights how the repetitive use of the pine nuts, for example, can restrict the representative reach of a company. He thus emphasizes the selective capacity of the designer and the reference abstraction process linked to a specific concept, citing a few of his projects like the Compagas and Nutrimental brands. For future designers, Menezes emphasizes the importance of talent above all else. However, faced with a hostile market, he defends the necessity of specialization for expanding competencies, along with the search for information from different areas, aimed at increasing cultural formation. In his opinion, digital possibilities should not discourage beginners from contact with the pen, with pencils, with analogical means of visual expression. Design is open to a range of areas of knowledge, expertise and specialization. 100 101 Jorge De MENEZES
