preferably in the consumer market and excellent price. Proven adaptability, once they
are in the rivers of the Amazon, their natural habitat, tambaqui reaches, on average 2.0
kg in a 12-month period, in semi-intensive system which makes the species, together
with other factors, greatly appreciated by the local inhabitants and even adding appeal
to other international markets.
Pirarucu (Arapaima gigas)
The choice of this species is justified because this is one of the main representatives
of the Amazon fish fauna. The red fish, as is known by the Indians, has been considered
the ox of the water, and entitled as the cod of Brazil. The commercial value of this
species relies on its large size and excellent flavor of its meat, especially, marketed as
drought-and salt “in nature”.
With high hardiness, considering the air breathing and high growth rate, these characteristics
were decisive factors for the success of this fish, reaching 10 kg in the period
shape of 12 months and 20 kg on average, with 24 months in semi-intensive system
(SAMPAIO, 2003).
