A necessidade de repensar espaços, tempos e relações no que vem sendo definido como contemporaneidade
pós-colonial sugere a ocorrência de paradigmas críticos e epistemológicos alternativos
e, simultaneamente, indispensáveis para uma leitura situada e “mundana” (Said, 2004) das práticas e
das linguagens de representação na contemporaneidade global. A este propósito, os chamados Indian
Ocean Studies (IOS) — ao operacionalizar a relação entre espaço e história e, assim, conceptualizando
o mar como um lugar de relações históricas, económicas e também culturais (Braudel, 1985) — proporcionam
um conjunto de abordagens disciplinares e itinerários epistemológicos que configuram o Oceano
Indico na perspectiva de uma “arena inter-regional” emblemática (Bose, 2005: 6) onde surgem sujeitos,
relações e representações específicas e alternativas. Por outras palavras, como salienta Isabel Hofmeyr:
“(…) we need to think of the Indian Ocean as the site par excellence of 'alternative modernities; those
formations of modernity that have taken shape in an archive of deep and layered existing social and intellectual
traditions” (2007: 13).
Deste modo, encarando o Oceano Índico como um paradigma crítico e cultural transnacional significativo,
esta Escola de Verão visa, através de uma abordagem transdisciplinar, considerar e analisar diferentes
narrativas e práticas artísticas na procura de cartografias culturais e críticas alternativas da contemporaneidade.
A partir das formas de representação das diversas culturas que se moldam e são, simultaneamente,
moldadas no espaço do Oceano Índico, procurar-se-á explorar as relações que ligam diferentes
identidades situadas neste universo, e que no seu conjunto multifacetado parecem oferecer outras
modernidades, hibridismos e cosmopolitismos no seio daquilo que poderá ser definido como Sul Global.
Estas diferentes formas de representação são abordadas considerando uma diversidade de linguagens
e estratégias narrativas — literárias, musicais, cinematográficas, antropológicas — bem como outras
escritas e arquivos da memória.

O objetivo do evento, de teor formativo, visa incentivar o diálogo interdisciplinar e logo o surgir de
novas abordagens comparativas, perspectivas teóricas e confluências transdisciplinares. Contando com
a participação de críticos e artistas cujas reflexões e propostas se situam nas diferentes geografias que
constituem o espaço do Oceano Índico, esta Escola de Verão procura responder aos desafios que
enfrenta, actualmente, a reflexão Humanística, encarando as perspetivações transnacionais e as abor-
dagens transdisciplinares como itinerários cruciais para ler e situar as representações culturais no mun-
do contemporâneo.

MODERNIDADES COMPARADAS
Estudos Literários/Estudos Culturais Revisitados
Desde a segunda metade do século XX, os estudos comparados têm vindo a afirmar-se como o espaço
por excelência da interrogação e da reflexão sobre o fenómeno literário e suas múltiplas hibridações e cruzamentos,
examinados numa perspectiva privilegiadamente transnacional e no eixo das suas relações com
outras linguagens artísticas e culturais. Decorrido um século sobre aquele que foi um período de afirmação
revolucionária de um paradigma de modernidade que se declinaria nos múltiplos modernismos europeus e
de além-Atlântico, o 3.º Colóquio da Primavera, a realizar nos dias 10 e 11 de Maio de 2012 na Universidade
do Minho, propõe repensar criticamente, sob uma ótica comparatista integradora e interdisciplinar, e
tomando-a quer nos seus pressupostos, quer nos seus corolários estético-culturais, político-ideológicos,
filosóficos e sociais, essa etapa da história humana essencial à construção da nossa própria contemporaneidade,
recorrentemente vertida nos termos e nos quadros teóricos de uma pósmodernidade ou mesmo de
uma transmodernidade.
O colóquio usará, como línguas de trabalho, o português, o espanhol e o inglês e organizar-se-á por painéis
temáticos, a estruturar em função das propostas de comunicações enviadas pelos participantes. Está
igualmente prevista a realização de uma conferência plenária e ainda uma mesa-redonda sobre o modernismo
brasileiro: "Semana de Arte Moderna, 90 anos (1922-2012)".
