SUMMARY
While continuing the same observation on the subject presented
to the Second Brazilian Meeting of Soil Science, the authors have
studied the residual effect of liming to correct the acid soils of the
Baixada of Sepetiba and have maintained the cultivation of beets
as indicator crop.
The significant importance of this treatment to improve the fertility
of those soils was confirmed, as well as the indication that the
amount of lime to apply should be limited to the quantities determined
by laboratory methods avoidin, in this case, to adopt the "liming
factor" recomended by CHRISTIANSEN and JENSEN (1).
The authors verified also that in 1949 and 1950 as inprevious
years, the crops of beets showed higher yields under pH conditions
around the neutral point, and that the residual effect of liming on
those soils was active during seven years, at least, without any significant
change in soil reaction.
