INSTITUTIONS, NATURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT AND THE WOOD INDUSTRY IN PARÁ
STATE IN BRAZIL
ABSTRACT
More than 61% of Brazil’s territory is covered by Amazon rain forest, which puts the country
among the major forest countries on the planet. The Brazilian Amazon is responsible for more than 90%
of the natural forest areas of Brazil. Although, under great human pressure, forestry logging is still a
major source of industrial income in the Region. The timber industry is, at the same time, a source of
wealth, and also a trouble spot, since a significant part of the logging is illegal. The explanation of
the existence of up to 50% of Amazonian timber production be taken illegally can not be attributed
only due to the absence of enforcement capacity of state Agencies. This study examines the dynamics
of recent developments in timber production in the Amazon, and in the state of Pará, and to clarify
aspects of the institutional and competitive environment in which the industry is included as one of
the sources of the behavior of wood producers. It also seeks to identify possible ways to develop a
more sustainable timber industry in the region.
