USE OF COPAIBA OIL (Copaifera paupera) FOR THE PRESERVATION TREATMENT OF
SPECIES SAMAÚMA (Ceiba pentandra)
ABSTRACT
This study aimed to evaluate the efficiency of copaiba oil (Copaifera paupera) as a natural
wood preservative of the specie Ceiba pentandra. The specimens of C. pentandra had the dimensions
of 2.0 x 10.0 x 40.0 cm, and were submerged for a period of 5 minutes in the solutions of copaiba oil
(T2) and copaiba oil + ethereal solution (T3). After soaking, the specimens were placed on platforms
in an open area for a period of three months. There were conducted two evaluations to verify the
effectiveness of preservative treatment. The first right after the removal of specimens from the area
where they were exposed and the second after a sanding surface. The results showed that the pure
copaiba oil and associated with ethereal solution contributed to the reduction of the mass loss of
specimens of C. pentandra. About the efficiency of the preservative solutions, there was no significant
difference between treatments, indicating that pure copaiba oil and associated with ethereal solution
is not effective in preserving the wood of C. pentandra.
