9. Elítros e asas - Os elítros (de (elytron), esto-
jo, cobertura, ou asas mesotoraxicas, completamente diferen-
ciados em bainhas de consistência coriacea ou cornea, prote-
gem as asas membranaceas, metatoraxicas. Estas, geralmen-
te bem mais desenvolvidas que aqueles, em repouso, ficam do-
bradas longitudinal e transversalmente sob os elítros.
Nos Coleópteros da antiga série Malacodermata os elitros,
como o exosqueleto, são de consistência relativamente mole
(Mollipennes) .
Nos besouros apteros (Carabidae, Ptinidae e Curculionidae)
os elitros apresentam-se soldados na linha sutural. Fa-
