NESTOR DE SOUSA
Documento 10
St. Michaels Jan. 22, 1854
Hon d . Sir
On the 12 th . inst I went to Furnace (sic) and had fine weather to
go but the following morning was rain so that it was 10 o’clock before
I could get out when I with Marianno and two men went to look over
the plants. I found the greater part in good condition a many has made
a good grouth. The New Holland plants has grown well also the
Rhododendrons Aucubas, Bermudas Cedars, Araucarias, Cedar of
Libanun, and Deodara, Cryptomeria, Abies Bursioniana (?), the tea
plant etc.
The Lilac, Larch, Ash, Ulmus montana, etc are what has grown
the least but they appear to have established themselves for another
year.
I left word with Marianno to plant the bermuda Cedars in all the
vacancys, and plant out the remainder in nursery rows.
I tried again to return by Lagoe (sic) de Congre (sic), but the weather
was to bad it begun to rain soon after I left Furnace so I was obliged
to relinquish my project and get home the best I could.
The plants here are looking as well as can he espected from the
wind and rain we have had, some plants are broke a little and the more
tender much cut by the wind, but I think our neighbours have suffered
more in proportion then we have at St. Anna. I cannot yet became / a
deciple to shelters though our plants groios more stunted but hear the
wind better every year.
A few of the last new plants looks yet sichly but on the whole I cannot
complain of their health.
The Poulownia I have removed and planted another in its place the
largest roots of the old one was so rotten the men could dig them like soil
with the spade.
I think I have nothing more at present. My wife joins me in humble
but sincere wishes for the restoration of good health to your Honourd
Lady also that you with your Family are in the full enjoyement of good
health as I am thankful to say this leaves us at presents.
