This work approaches a stage of the visual arts in the city of Campinas (SP), by means<br />

of the survey of the Vanguarda Group performance, distinguishing the career of one of<br />

its members, the painter Thomaz Perina. This purpose takes to the scenario of the<br />

Brazilian art trends in years 50 and 60 and to the scenario of Campinas city in same<br />

period, whose spaces and facts of the cultural environment impact the life experience<br />

and the production of these artists. It seems appropriate for us to choose Perina to<br />

exemplify this process and its conditionings due to his works quality, his important role<br />

in the Group organization and his longer career. The boarding of the subject has two<br />

axles: Documental, when, from the focus, Thomaz Perina, we identify to events and<br />

agents of the artistic production, especially the activities of the Vanguarda Group;<br />

interpretative, when we follow the formal elaboration of the images by Thomaz Perina,<br />

designating affinities, influences and options declared by the painter himself, or<br />

detected by critics and in our analysis. Aiming to cover the five decades of his career,<br />

the approach is chronological, with frequent crossings of these two axles, illustrated by<br />

works exhibits of the respective periods.<br />

In Part I we deal with the FORMATION and MODERN OPTION: 1. THE ORIGINAL<br />

LANDSCAPE leads us back to the first half of the last century, when we find the boy,<br />

and later the youngster Thomaz exploring the city and establishing in the paintings his<br />

way of relation with it. The contact with new experiences drives him into modern art<br />

patterns, 2. In THE DICLOSED LANDSCAPE, we reach him emerging for a new<br />

sphere, next to the constructivism source. The Vanguarda Group organization and<br />

exhibitions are going to change the route of the visual arts in Campinas. 3. THE<br />

RESTORED LANDSCAPE happens in years 70. Besides of his painting development,<br />

Perina’s presence was distinguished at this time as decorator in houses and in public<br />

spaces, as well as designer of sets and costumes for theater, opera and carnival. Part II,<br />

REVISION: 4. In THE REVISITED LANDSCAPE, we try to analyze of Perina and his<br />

peers careers in the art panorama, starting from the official project set up by City Hall<br />

administration, coming to the academic area, where three papers about the Group were<br />

issued. Part III, CONCLUSION: 5. THE INTERIOR LANDSCAPE concludes the<br />

appreciation on the Perina painting, by following his process, coming close to the<br />

privacy of his creation observing his gestures and speech and recapitulating his story.In<br />

Part IV, DOCUMENTS about Perina career and Vanguarda Groupp activities are<br />

attached. Part V, CHRONOLOGY, finishes this work.<br />
