ouvido para a melopéia homérica (“flui o sangue de envolta e o chão denigre”; “purpúrea morte o imerge em noite escura”), e “transcriou” belos epítetos, como “dedirrósea Aurora”, “criniazul Netuno”, “olhigázea Palas”, “alidourada Íris”, “olhinegros Aqueus”. GUIMAR<strong>Ã</strong>ES ROSA: MONSTRO LITERÁRIO Assim como as traduções de Odorico Mendes, Grande Sertão: Veredas provocou uma acirrada polêmica. Nos anos que se seguiram ao seu lançamento, foi elogiado por críticos e escritores, como Antônio Callado, Paulo Rónai, Afrânio Coutinho, Cavalcanti Proença, Oswaldino Marques, Tristão de Ataíde, Pedro Xisto, Euryalo Canabrava e Antonio Candido; mas também foi duramente criticado por Marques Rebelo, Adonias Filho, Ferreira Gullar, Ascendino Leite, Wilson Martins, Nelson Werneck Sodré e Silveira Bueno, dentre outros. O cerne da polêmica girava em torno de suas “inovações estilísticas e lingüísticas”, de suas “experimentações no plano da estética literária”: “criação de uma linguagem nova”; “excessos de hermetismo vocabular”; “língua codificada, diferente dos padrões tradicionais”; “manipulação arbitrária das palavras”; “língua estranha e sintaxe extravagante”; “excessos de virtuosismo, espécie de esnobismo literário” (79). Para ilustrar a polêmica, recorremos a uma anedota curiosa, que envolve o professor Silveira Bueno. Sua crítica ao Grande Sertão: Veredas, publicada em junho de 1957, recorre à mesma imagem utilizada por Sílvio Romero contra Odorico Mendes: “De uma coisa eu me admirei: da formidável gargalhada que estará dando o autor desde que o José Olympio teve a coragem de publicar estas toneladas de cimento armado e mais ainda: desde que os seus neófitos começaram a ajoelhar-se perante o seu monstro literário!” (80). O paralelo com Sílvio Romero é imediato: além de recorrer à imagem do “monstro”, o alvo central de sua crítica são as inovações verbais do escritor (81). Ainda que o autor não faça qualquer referência a Odorico Mendes em sua crítica a Guimarães Rosa, tudo nos leva a crer que ele compartilhava das críticas às suas traduções. Uma suposição lógica, mas totalmente equivocada. Em seu prefácio à Ilíada de Odorico Mendes, datado de abril de 1956, Silveira Bueno faz uma verdadeira apologia de sua tradução, num ensaio que ignora totalmente as críticas de Sílvio Romero: “A invenção do poeta foi magnífica: a auritrônia Juno. Esta é outra qualidade de Odorico Mendes, preceito que recebeu de Homero: a formação de termos novos pela adjunção de outros já conhecidos. Para dar uma simples amostra da sua fecunda invenção, notamos, somente no primeiro livro, todas estas formações segundo os moldes do grande mestre grego: infrugífero mar; altipotente Jove; celerípede Aquiles; olhiespertos gregos; nubícogo Saturno; arciargênteo Febo; quinquedentado espeto; Aurora dedirrósea; Nereida argentípede; auritrônia Juno; Helena bracicândida; claviargêntea lâmina. [...] Odorico Mendes, atendo-se, no geral, aos melhores autores clássicos portugueses, especialmente a Filinto Elísio de quem se fez discípulo, não duvidou, como o mestre grego, de usar palavras de outras procedências, empregando galicismos, italianismos, e o que é mais notável, recorrendo aos modismos do Brasil” (82). Para Silveira Bueno, as inovações de um clássico traduzindo Homero são louváveis, mas não as “ousadias” de um escritor contemporâneo. Dois pesos, duas medidas. O que valoriza em Odorico Mendes é justamente o que vai recriminar, um ano após, em Guimarães Rosa, em conformidade com a crítica da época: os neologismos, formados com palavras importadas de outras línguas.
