Narrativas exemplares de mulheres “Domésticas”
In order to understand the self-evaluation and social assessment attributed to the work
of the Domestic woman, the analysis and interpretation of 8 Identitary Trajectories of
Domestic Women of Alentejo, who throughout their lives have been full-time Domestics,
(or have somehow managed or are trying to reconcile this Dual Task) is fundamental.
The Problematization of the Work done by Domestic Women follows theories such as
those of Parsons and Daniel Bertaux, having the elaboration of the conceptualization of
Housework been based on Virginia Ferreira; Gules Lipovetsky and Ana Nunes de Almeida.
By keeping in mind the narrative works and by following a comprehensive qualitative
methodology, based on the method of Analytical Writing such as Praxis, some Logics of
Action and several Territories with Social Identities have been identified, as well as various
reactions and some Risk Strategies.
Upon completion of the interpretation of the cases it becomes apparent that, in
addition to the aspect of domestic life that all the narrators have in common, there is still a
predominance of Identity Territories Socio-Labour, of Family and School. These women
possess a clear awareness of the devaluation of domestic work by their Family and Society.
In this sense, there is also a negative self-evaluation of their daily tasks, resulting in a
unanimous desire of liberation, which is usually achieved through Dual Tasking, in other
words, by having a profession outside the home, one truthfully recognized by society in
which recognition of their work is guaranteed as well as the possibility of achieving financial
independence.
