Cada uma das peças constitutivas da espiritromba é a gálea<br />

maxilar ou - como ainda admitem alguns autores - esta constitue<br />

a pare<strong>de</strong> externa da maxila, sendo a pare<strong>de</strong> interna, que forma com<br />

a do lado oposto o canal sugador, formada pela lacínia (fig. 3).<br />

Na quase totalida<strong>de</strong> dos Lepidópteros a espiritromba funciona<br />

como órgão exclusivamente sugador, <strong>de</strong>stinado a extrair o néctar<br />

das flores ou haurir quaisquer outras substancias líquidas <strong>de</strong> que<br />

se alimentam, mediante<br />

a ação aspi-<br />

rante da faringe.<br />

Em algumas espé-<br />

cies, porém, como a<br />

mariposa do "curu-<br />

querê" (Alabama argillacea),<br />

a parte<br />

apical das maxilas<br />

é armada <strong>de</strong> <strong>de</strong>ntes<br />

ou espinhos robus-<br />

tos, que permitem a<br />

penetração da espi-<br />

ritromba nas frutas<br />

para a extração do<br />

sumo (figs. 5 e 6).<br />

ser vistos o cardo e<br />

respectivo estipe, no<br />

blood pressure, in the same way that a toy paper "snake" is unrolled by inflating it, and ir must<br />

be observed that the natural uncoiling of the lepidopterous proboscis, beginning at the base and<br />

progressing toward the tip, has a striking ressemblance to the unrolling of the inflate "snake".<br />

The mechanism for creating the assumed blood pressure, however, is not evi<strong>de</strong>nt".<br />
