Uma primeira leitura comparada dos textos de Borges e Burton,
sem se deter em pormenores, é o suficiente para se chegar à constatação
de que as mudanças operadas pelo autor de Ficciones em relação ao
material de que se valeu são profundas tanto no plano formal quanto no
do conteúdo. Em nenhum momento o Borges tradutor dá indícios de ter
se importado com a letra do texto. Entenda-se letra segundo a proposta
de Berman: “nem calco, nem (problemática) reprodução, mas atenção
voltada para o jogo de significantes.” 475
A tradução que Borges oferece aos seus leitores é antes uma
adaptação de Burton, fundada na hipertextualidade e em um platonismo
acerca das Noites, mas não em um etnocentrismo prejudicial. Para
