This thesis analyzes the presence of The thousand and one nights (Alf
layla-wa layla) in the work of Argentine writer Jorge Luis Borges
(1899-1986), focusing on the Arabic text as translated literature. The set
of stories played an important role in Borges’s readings and also in the
development of his thought on translation and insertion of Islamic East
in his mature literary expression. Moreover, was through his translation
and creation of some Nights’s episodes that the author first
experimented with themes and images that made him world famous, as
the labyrinth, the Aleph, and the double. Thus, based on this, the long
relationship between the writer and the Nights is analyzed here while
reading and reception of the book versions, a basis in the articulation of
his ideas on translation, and, finally, an inspiration and space for
innovations in his narrative poetics.
