Embora a polêmica tenha inspirado em Borges observações
importantes sobre tradução, a visão que ele demonstrou da contenda é
relativamente seletiva. Muitos críticos erroneamente crêem que o
escritor sintetiza as posições dos professores ingleses, quando em
verdade ele não leva em conta a intenção de Newman em oferecer uma
janela para o leitor moderno vislumbrar o antigo mundo grego e os
recursos que empregou para conseguir isso, nem o desejo de Arnold em
recriar em inglês os mesmos efeitos textuais que seriam concernentes a
um leitor contemporâneo de Homero ou as observações do crítico sobre
os efeitos da leitura da tradução em alguém que domina o grego. 222
De acordo com Kristal,
In Borges’s personal synthesis the two Hellenists
represent the two main options available to a
translator: either a literal translation that strives to
register all the singularities of a work, or a
recreation that eliminates the details, obscuring
the work’s general effects. A bad literal
translation can produce curious and even
ridiculous effects, and a recreation can be more
faithful to an original than a literal translation.
This, of course, was Arnold’s main objection to
Newman’s translation. Borges, however, does not
assume that the effects of a literal translation are
necessarily objectionable, because they can enrich
and even revitalize a language. 223
