Pelas tramas de uma cidade migrante (Joinville, 1980-2010)

The city of Joinville, located in the Northeast region of the State of
Santa Catarina, has become, from the 1980´s, its most populous city,
due to internal migration flows. This study aims to correlate this recent
migration process to territorial boundaries and urban sociabilities’
transformations, as well as to cultural identifications processes created
by Joinville habitants. First of all, the festivities – as a governmental
initiative or organized by the residents in their quotidian – are objects
under analysis, and have been interlaced with other happenings captured
from the researched documentation. By the historical interpretation rise
movements that, under the sign of the difference (evidenced by the
migrant presence), weave and create new meanings for Joinville as a
“Germanic city” or as an “ethnical diversity stage”. On a second moment,
the historiography and press writings are focused, seeking to understand
how writers have defined the migrants role and the place they have
occupied in Joinville’s History. Based on oral History methodology, the
narratives of migrant memories – as unique characters – are analyzed,
more deeply reflecting the complexes questions that permeate their life
histories, the use and appropriation of the difference. The same questions
arise during their narratives, when the migrants try to make sense to
their past and present lives in the city. On the way of the investigation,
new tracks, boundaries and identifications have emerged, allowing us
understanding Joinville by the crossing of practices and representations
which turns it into a unique city, at the same time making it closer to
other contemporaneous migrant cities.
