Background: the pathogenesis of chronic Chagas cardiomyopathy (CCC) is complex, but
clinical, haemodynamic, neurohormonal and inflammatory responses seem similar to other
cardiomyopathies. We compared these responses between CCC patients (pts) with and without
systolic dysfunction, as left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) is a powerful prognostic
determinant.
Methods: a sub-analysis of a double-blind, placebo-controlled randomised trial in 42 pts with CCC
was conducted. Patients were divided into those with LVEF ≤ 45% (group I) and those with LVEF
> 45% (group II).
Results: baseline mean (± SD) LVEF was 30.25 ± 8.12% in group I (n=20), and 55.0 ± 6.8% in
group II (n=22). Framingham score (group I - 3.2 ±1.7; group II - 1.4 ± 1.1 – p=0.01), NYHA class
(group I - NYHA I = 6/20, II = 10/20, III 4/20; group II - NYHA I= 16/22, II = 4/22, III = 2/22;
