Este artigo tem por objetivo avaliar o desempenho do mercado de trabalho
metropolitano em 2009, procurando contextualizá-lo no período coberto pela
Pesquisa Mensal do Emprego (PME) do IBGE. Fica claro com base na análise
dos principais resultados que 2009 foi o ano mais difícil para o mercado de
trabalho no passado recente. A estabilidade da taxa de desemprego foi fruto de
movimentos do lado da oferta, haja vista que a expansão do nível da ocupação
foi claudicante, chegando a ser negativa em alguns momentos e recuperando-
-se no final do ano. Por outro lado, a massa de rendimentos cresceu, permitindo
a geração de empregos nos segmentos do comércio e serviços que amenizaram
os impactos negativos da crise, sentidos sobretudo na indústria. Em que pese
ter sido um ano difícil, os indícios de reaquecimento nos últimos meses ensejam
perspectivas auspiciosas para 2010.

This paper aims at evaluating the performance of Brazil’s metropolitan labor
market in 2009. It is based mainly on the information provided by an IBGE (Brazilian
Institute of Geography and Statistics) monthly household survey (PME).
Survey results clearly show that 2009 was the hardest of the past few years
for the labor market. Unemployment rate stability was driven by movements
along the labor supply curve. Occupation expansion was rather erratic and
even negative at times, despite signs of recovery towards the end of the year.
On the other hand, global income growth helped create jobs in the commerce
and service sector, while mitigating the negative impact of the economic crisis.
Though 2009 was a tough year, clear indications of recovery in the past few
months point to a bright outlook in 2010.
