Staging of Feline Chronic Kidney Disease
Abstract
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a disease with insidious evolution, progressive and
irreversible, common in our company animals. This is the most frequently diagnosed kidney
disease in felines, responsible for high rates of morbidity and mortality, especially in older
cats. The International Renal Interest Society proposed a classification system for renal
disease, in order to facilitate the implementation of appropriate clinical guidelines for
diagnosis, prognosis and therapy of this disease.
This dissertation was developed from September 2009 to March 2010, as part of the
curricular training in the Integrated Master degree in Veterinary Medicine at the Veterinary
Hospital Montenegro. This consisted of the characterization of a population sample of 25
cats with CKD presented for consultation or hospitalized from January 2009 to March 2010,
with special attention to the staging of all these patients and sub-staging of 6 felines. These
animals were aged between 3 and 17 years, 48% of which developed anemia and 80% the
cause of CKD has not been determined. The average survival time of cats that died of this
disease was 243 days. As for staging, none of the cats was in stage I, 44% were in stage II,
40% in stage III and only 16% were in stage IV. According to the presence and severity of
proteinuria, 50% of the cats were classified as proteinuric, 33,3% were non-proteinuric and
16,7% were borderline proteinuric. In the sub-staging based in blood pressure, 50% had low
risk, 33,3% minimum risk and only 16,7% had moderate risk. None of the cats had evidence
of injuries/complications in target organs.
This staging system continues to evolve through new research and clinical studies aimed at
early diagnosis of kidney disease, which will allow the institution of preventive measures,
treatment and monitoring that can slow disease progression, improving the quality of life of
these patients.
