ABSTRACT<br />

A Prótese Total <strong>do</strong> Joelho: A História <strong>da</strong> Arte <strong>–</strong> Revisão Bibliográfica<br />

Introduction: Total Knee Replacement (TKR) is a procedure that began around<br />

1820 and has already met several revolutions and innovations. That was a long<br />

road that ran from the initial complications of the almost <strong>total</strong> lack of mobility to<br />

the current problem of wear of different materials used in construction of the<br />

prosthesis.<br />

This is a procedure that is accepted and currently proposed for the treatment of<br />

articular pathology in any form (degenerative, traumatic, inflammatory or<br />

tumoral), gaining more supporters in relation to non-invasive medical treatment.<br />

Advances lead to greater stability, mobility and duration diminishes more<br />

adverse outcomes and co-morbid conditions.<br />

Methods: It was searched the electronic <strong>da</strong>tabases Pubmed, E-medicine,<br />

Highwire, Medline, articles with the words "Total Knee Replacement History",<br />

between 1950-2010 and the university library on the books of the medical<br />

discipline of Orthopaedics.<br />

Conclusion: Since the <strong>da</strong>wn of the discipline of Orthopaedics who tries to cope<br />

with the pain and replace the knee on his mobility and support. This work<br />

attempts to reveal the great journey that leads us to know, consider,<br />

recommend and innovate the Total Knee Replacement, telling her story, from<br />

the simple union junction between bone marrow cavity through to the medullary<br />

canals until the mini-invasive surgery that use biomaterials with consequent a<br />

greater biomechanical with maximum durability.<br />
