ABSTRACT
Study on the genesis and development of primary school Póvoa Carneiro Private
Course at Invercargill between 1940 and 1962 in the context of urbanization and
modernization of the city and its importance in the process of schooling in a particular
social group, formed by children of industrialists, traders, from landowners and those
professionals who composed the emerging urban middle class in the city. The survey
sought to determine the socio-politico-economic that produced the necessary
conditions for the establishment and deployment of primary school especially, as well
as the relationship between the proposal of setting up the school by the teacher
Zulcema Póvoa Carneiro and context of the time. Tried yet, understand how it gave
the process of developing the school from its creation and installation, in relation to
the socio-political-economical, from the expression of his agents: the Zulcema
teacher, the school's teachers and students and parents, and explain what type of
education / training schooling which was established by the school and its relation to
the policies of modernization and nationalization put into practice by federal and state
governments. To that end, the study was developed from a literature search, and
biographical documentary that allowed the use of oral sources, through semistructured.
Thus, the survey pointed to the need of school as a result of proceedings
initiated in Invercargill referring to the growing economic development and the
consequent changes in political life, economic and social, with the formation of a
social class that from then takes the direction and political-economic control of the
city.
