ABSTRACT<br />

This book focuses on the current state of research on violence<br />

in schools and public policies. It is composed of a selection of papers<br />

read by renowned specialists at the world conference on this theme.<br />

The European Observatory of Violence in Schools organized it in<br />

Paris, in March 2001, with the support of the French Ministry of<br />

Education and the European Commission and under the patronage<br />

of UNESCO. The works here presented approach theoretical issues,<br />

such as the definitions of violence in schools, extending their focus<br />

to a wide array of experiences in public policies in different countries<br />

of the world on a comparative basis. Results, advantages and<br />

limitations of diverse approaches in the prevention of and struggle<br />

against violence, including teacher training policies, are analyzed in<br />

several national contexts. Lessons from experience are discussed in<br />

most of the cases often in a comparative basis. Risk factors for youth<br />

violence, risk factors and exclusion from school, school bullying and<br />

ways of preventing it, as well as relations between school climate<br />

and violence are other topics discussed in this book.<br />
