Summary
O QUE É “SER ADULTO”? – PRÁTICAS E REPRESENTAÇÕES SOCIAIS
To promote the construction of the Sociology of Adulthood in Portugal, it was
developed a research about «What is to “be adult”? Practices and social
representations». This study was done in collaboration with the Institut National
d'Études Démographiques (INED), in Paris.
To consider adult life as a social category, matter of Sociology of Adulthood, is to
understand that this stage of life has its problems and specific features that must be
studied and subject to social policies. It is a way to admit that "being adult” it is not a
static stage but a period of changes according to historical and social context.
In the empirical work of this research, it was adopted processes of quantitative
method. It was done a survey by questionnaire with personal interviews. This work
tookplace in 2006 and 1571 individuals were surveyed, people aged between 25 and 54
years old and resident in mainland Portugal.
The main objective of this research was to understand if there is a reference model of
adulthood for all individuals or, depending on the socioeconomic and cultural
requirements, if there are multiple forms and representations of "being adult".
