ABSTRACT<br />
This dissertation investigates the motivations that caused many Italians and their<br />
descen<strong>da</strong>nts to settle in the state of Rio Grande do Sul as of 1875 and to decide on<br />
migrating to the West of Santa Catarina early in the twentieth century. Through the theory<br />
and methodology of Oral History, the study also seeks to perceive the way these migrants<br />
conceive their experience; based on elements they brought from their native land. The<br />
images of the past are represented now as a setting of innumerable difficultides and<br />
deprivations, now as a scenario in which the world and its people were more united and<br />
mutually sympathetic. In the confrontation between the past and the present, the images<br />
interlace and overlap, revealing practices, strategies, discourses and relations built and/or<br />
broken in the <strong>da</strong>y-to-<strong>da</strong>y life of men, women and children who helped to build the history<br />
the West of Santa Catarina.<br />
