and to beg he will receive at his outposts any letter that may come
addressed to me under cover to him.
I sincerely hope that the Marquis's influence may induce D. Miguel
to termínate the dreadful war.
Your faithful servant.=Tr. Russell.
DOC. CCLXIX
Esboro de um artigo que W. Russell quería que se publicasse na «Gazela Oflicial»,
condemnando a intransigencia de D. Miguel
Sketch
Copy. —To insert officially in the Clironica, that Spain and England
having offered their mediation to terminate the conflict which desolates
Portugal, the intervention of those Powers was gratefully and instantly
accepted by the Duke of Braganza, in the ñame of the Queen, because
his heart bleeds for the suffering of the Portuguese nation, and because
he fully confides in the justice of those Powers —because he has made
the greatest sacrifices for the cause that he defends and is willing
to make still greater sacrifices— that he has offered every concession,
and he will grant any others at any time, to conciliate the persons
unhappily engaged in the rebellion against their country and their
lawful sovereign.
D. Miguel, actuated by less kind and generous sentiments towards
his country and the Portuguese people, has rejected the proffered
mediation, and consequently is alone responsible for all the blood that
will flow before the end of tliis unnatural civil war.
The Duke of Braganza has no doubt and can have no fear of
its ultímate result, and can conscientiously rejoice in having done
every thing which is in his power to basten the desired pacification.
In this salutary object he his sure of receiving not only the approbation,
but also the active and officious cooperation of England and other
foreign Powers, the Allies of Portugal.
