Sir.—I have the pleasure of confirming my last respects to Your<br />

Excellency under <strong>da</strong>te of 24 th ult., since which I am deprived of your<br />

esteemed favours.<br />

I have the honour of informing Your Excellency that being desirous<br />

of settling my open accounts, I have proceeded to valué upon you for<br />

the balance due by the Portuguese Government made up with interest<br />

to this <strong>da</strong>y as per statement annexed, amounting to £ 11.962,18,5<br />

íurnishing my draft for the same for £ 11.962,18,5 at 56*/2 making<br />

rs 50:815^947 at 30 d<br />

/ g to order, and I request due protection may<br />

be granted to this valuation, closing therewith this account per appoint.<br />

In the event of Your Excellency having anticipated this mode of<br />

arranging for the balance, by providing for the same with remittances,<br />

I shall have much pleasure in placing the amount to account for the<br />

payment of the ensuing dividend, or if preferable in the opinión of<br />

Your Excellency I could apply it to the purpose of purchasing for<br />

the sinking fund. This latter object I beg leave to recommend to the<br />

attention of Your Excellency, as the circumstance of making the<br />

necessary provisión by remittances in accor<strong>da</strong>nce with the terms of<br />

the contract is of a nature to deserve unremitting consideration.<br />

I reitérate with pleasure the assurances of my constant willingness<br />

to render my services agreeable to the Portuguese Government.<br />

With sentiments of the highest esteem and respect, I have the<br />
