sr. barao de Rothschild.—Acenso a prezadissima de v. s. a

de 14 do p. p., e sentindo qne o sr. Ricardo nao quizesse annuir ao
plano de remessa para os dividendos, que eu havia combinado com
o nosso oommum amigo o sr. Mendizabal, posso todavia dar a certeza
a v. s.* que as minhas ordens do Banco para a remessa dos 80:000
soberanos teem sido regularmente cumpridas, nao me restando duvida
que o meu successor no ministerio da fazenda terá feito a devida
honra ao saque do sr. barao de Moncorvo.
Resta-me accrescentar a v. s. a
que a nova prova que v. s. a
acaba
de dar da contemplado que lhe merecem os negocios portuguezes
nao será perdida na minha lembrança e que, posto qne retirado dos
negocios por motivos que v. s. a
terá sabido, eu nao perderei a primeira
occasiao qne se me offereeer para representar á Rainha os seus distinctos
serviços em favor das medidas do governo.

Carta de Rothschild aos 14 de novembro:
«Sir.—I had the honour of receiving Your Excellency's letter of the 5th inst.,
and was happy to observe that orders had been transmitted by Your Excellency
to the Directora of the Bank of Lisbon to make to Mr. Ricardo as well as to
myself large remittances in gold and bilis to meet the payment of the dividends
due on the lst of December and January next. I hope and trust that Your
Excellency's orders will be most promptly attended to, because the public prints
have already made mention of large amounts of gold being shortly expected for
the express purpose of paying the dividends, and it is always desirable to adhere
strictly to what the papers pnblish in a semi-official way.
al mnst now cali Your Excellency's attention to a circumstance of the highest
importance to the prosperíty of Portugal, and even to the stability of the administrafion
of which Your Excellency is a member. I have learned from Barón
Moncorvo and Mr. Carbonell, with whom I have had severa! conferences on the
subject, that Mr. Ricardo objected to have the advertisement for the payment of
the dividend due on the lst December inserted in the news-papers, in consequence
of the necessary funds not being in his hands. I need not assure Your Excellency
that it it has ever been my desire to be of service to ali Governments with
