ABSTRACT<br />

The objective of this work is to develop a study about the paper and the qualification of the<br />

monitors that act in the Enlarged Day of the Program of Eradication of the Infantile Work -<br />

PETI, of the city of João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba. In the attempt of reaching this aim, it<br />

showed the historical aspects of some programs of attendance to the children and adolescents<br />

in Brazil, locating the legal subject, as the influence of the Child's Statute and of the<br />

Adolescent - ECA, created after to constituent of 1988. With this, the basic conditions<br />

appeared for the implantation of PETI in every national territory and, especially, in João<br />

Pessoa city - PB. Starting from the etymology of the word monitors from the pertinent<br />

literature to the subject, the functions are discussed that the same exercises in the educational<br />

system, seen by the focus of the Popular Education, until the actuality, basing on the reality of<br />

the Enlarged Day of PETI. Finally, it is made an analysis of the profile of the monitor of the<br />

program, starting from collected information of a semi-structured questionnaire, applied to 57<br />

present subjects in a formation workshop for the monitors of the Program, promoted by the<br />

technical team and for the coordination of the Program. The collected data demonstrate that<br />

most of the monitors is female, in the 40 year-old age group. They are afro-descendants, with<br />

the complete medium teaching, and without necessary formation for us to act as education<br />

agents close to the children and adolescents of the Enlarged Day of the Program. Besides they<br />

demonstrate little knowledge of the guidelines of the Program, they exercise the function of<br />

more monitors for the qualification lack and vacancies in the job market, or, just, for us to<br />

acquire professional experience. It was also observed the lack of integration of the work<br />

developed by the monitors with the teachers of the regular school, one of the axes of<br />

fundamental communication of attendance for the good school acting of the exits of the<br />

infanto-juvenile work, recommended by the guidelines of PETI.<br />
