ABSTRACT
The objective of this work is to develop a study about the paper and the qualification of the
monitors that act in the Enlarged Day of the Program of Eradication of the Infantile Work -
PETI, of the city of João Pessoa, capital of Paraíba. In the attempt of reaching this aim, it
showed the historical aspects of some programs of attendance to the children and adolescents
in Brazil, locating the legal subject, as the influence of the Child's Statute and of the
Adolescent - ECA, created after to constituent of 1988. With this, the basic conditions
appeared for the implantation of PETI in every national territory and, especially, in João
Pessoa city - PB. Starting from the etymology of the word monitors from the pertinent
literature to the subject, the functions are discussed that the same exercises in the educational
system, seen by the focus of the Popular Education, until the actuality, basing on the reality of
the Enlarged Day of PETI. Finally, it is made an analysis of the profile of the monitor of the
program, starting from collected information of a semi-structured questionnaire, applied to 57
present subjects in a formation workshop for the monitors of the Program, promoted by the
technical team and for the coordination of the Program. The collected data demonstrate that
most of the monitors is female, in the 40 year-old age group. They are afro-descendants, with
the complete medium teaching, and without necessary formation for us to act as education
agents close to the children and adolescents of the Enlarged Day of the Program. Besides they
demonstrate little knowledge of the guidelines of the Program, they exercise the function of
more monitors for the qualification lack and vacancies in the job market, or, just, for us to
acquire professional experience. It was also observed the lack of integration of the work
developed by the monitors with the teachers of the regular school, one of the axes of
fundamental communication of attendance for the good school acting of the exits of the
infanto-juvenile work, recommended by the guidelines of PETI.
