como parte dos requisitos necessários à obtenção do título <strong>de</strong> Mestre em<br />
Endocrinologia.<br />
Papillary <strong>carcinoma</strong> is the most common type of non-medullary thyroid<br />
cancer and its familial form has been increasingly reported with an estimated<br />
prevalence of about 5%.This study’s objectives were: to evaluate the prevalence of<br />
papillary <strong>carcinoma</strong> among the first <strong>de</strong>gree relatives of patients with this tumor;<br />
verify the existence of any relationship with thyroid dysfunction or autoimmunity<br />
and the prevalence of thyroid structural abnormalities.A transverse study was<br />
performed with the inclusion of 143 first <strong>de</strong>gree relatives of 52 patients followed for<br />
papillary <strong>carcinoma</strong> of the thyroid in the outpatient clinic of the HUCFF ( average of<br />
2.75 relatives per in<strong>de</strong>x case). Serum TSH, free T4 and TPOAb were <strong>de</strong>termined<br />
and thyroid ultrasonography (US) was performed. Any nodule larger than 1 cm and<br />
all smaller but suspicious nodules were sent to FNAB. Malignant or suspicious<br />
cytologies were indication for surgery. Of the patients harboring the familial form of<br />
