Joseph Straus: Sonatinas do not have any absolute definitive form<br />

in any case, they just mean small piano pieces. So, it wasn’t so<br />

much that they were innovative formally as they were appealing<br />

musically and appealing particularly in the way in which that they<br />

combine traditional sounding el<strong>em</strong>ents with more typical and<br />

idiomatic post-tonal kinds of musical attributes. That was apparent<br />

on the first hearing and it turned out to be one of the central issues<br />

that you ended up discussing, namely the ways in which he uses<br />

traditional materials, folk materials, mo<strong>da</strong>l things in a context and in<br />

a way that makes it very clear that these are cont<strong>em</strong>porary<br />
